Along the Roman Road.
Within the cracks
On chalk paths,
Lies a map of time.
Deep within the earth
Sleeps a history
With secrets of the past.
 

 

 

Over the past year I have had the upheaval of moving house and relocating to a new area. Not easy
 for such a home bird as myself. 
I now live between Dorchester & Weymouth, very different from the security & comfort that I was so 
familiar with on the Isle of Purbeck, where I had lived for many years. My new home is a very different 
terrain from the wild openness of Purbeck with its heavenly heath land, sandy beaches, rugged cliffs &
gentle hills.
I now am getting to grips with a heavily farmed landscape, an endless green patchwork of undulating 
hills, the exposed Maiden Castle, the endless strip of Chesil beach and the construction site of the new 
relief road! It has been difficult and uncomfortable. Thank goodness then for the Roman road & the chalk 
paths which have been trod for hundreds of years, there for me lay something of a more gentle past with 
a slower pace. Those paths still reveal some sort of history for me to connect with. It is here then that I 
set to work, allowing my imagination to dream of quieter times. It is an essential part of my work to 
find some sort of calm & balance, without it I don’t function clearly.   
Dorset is my home, my past is with country folk. The knowledge that my mother & her family passed onto 
me stays with meeven though she is long gone. Being brought up with an acute awareness of nature & old 
stories of the past has stayed with me, I connect to the earth. My form of expressing that instinct is through 
paint.My abstract paintings are complex in their content & are an instinctive response to the landscape. The 
rich & polished surfaces are a clear indication for my love of paint.  
For me the sky merges into the land & the shadows fall into the sea, they become one.
The paintings may have moods of the sea & barren landscapes about them. I identify myself with isolation & 
the wild freedom of desolate landscapes, untamed shores & unrevealed secrets.
